The story
Photo libraries hold decades of a life and answer almost nothing about it. Amoli's answer is to read the library — every photograph, one at a time, described in written words by a model that lives on the phone — and to let the keeper ask their own past questions in plain language. It reads while you sleep: plug in, tap, and by morning more of your life answers.
Amoli was built by one developer on a simple refusal: memories are not for sale, so there is nowhere in the design for them to leave. That refusal is not a settings toggle — it is the architecture. There is no server to breach and no account to leak, because neither exists.
For the technical audience
- 1The model. Gemma 4 E4B (~3.7 GB), running on-device via LiteRT, downloaded once from Amoli's own CDN. Vision and text; readings, conversation, and card lines all come from the same local model.
- 2The numbers. A first note on each photograph in a few seconds — hundreds an hour on current iPhones; a 14,000-photo library gets its first words in about three plugged-in nights, the fuller readings follow behind, then stays current on its own.
- 3The war story. Shipping this surfaced real engineering: iOS kills the GPU's surfaces when the screen locks, mid-inference — filed upstream as LiteRT-LM issue #3087 — and the whole reading experience is designed around that constraint. We are happy to go as deep on the internals as you want.
